Recruitment for a part-time "Outreach Officer"

Climate Action Newtown (CAN) is recruiting for a person to help us to engage with more people in Newtown, to get more people understanding what can be done at a community level to tackle climate change, and to help them to make their first steps.

We are looking to take on a freelance worker on fixed term contract to assist us on the following basis:

Contract terms

The work would be part time, 7 hours a week for 25 weeks. Hours flexible by arrangement, and would be based on work from home (total 175 hours).

The pay would be £11 per hour, paid on submission of timesheet and invoice (self-employed) monthly in arrears. The worker would be responsible for his or her own income tax.

There would be a £20 per month allowance to cover the costs of a mobile phone contract.

Line managementYou would be required to attend monthly meetings of the CAN committee and the committee would act as your line manager.
Duties:

Building CAN membership by:

  • Preparing a membership pack for CAN and planning a campaign to attract new members
  • Making use of the Circular Economy Mid Wales shop in Broad Street to engage with the public (noticeboard, presentations)
  • Gathering data on local voluntary organisations in Newtown using a variety of sources
  • Making contact with each one via email, letter or phone to introduce CAN and sending a membership pack
  • Make contact with each one via email, letter or phone to introduce CAN and send a membership pack

Building CAN’s online presence by:

  • Gathering case study material for a variety of climate change related activity in Newtown and hinterland
  • Working with and under the direction of the Committee, to communicate with and engage the local community by drafting relevant website content, and by posting to CAN social media accounts (e.g. Facebook, Instagram and Twitter)
  • Working with and under the direction of the Committee, to monitor CAN’s social media accounts and its general contact and communications email account(s). According to the nature of each communication either respond or request a response from the relevant Committee member

Any other reasonable requested activities consistent with the operations of Climate Action Newtown.

Termination of contractThe contract may be terminated by either side with one weeks’ notice.
Required skills and experienceThe applicant will need to demonstrate an understanding of the many-faceted nature of the climate emergency, and an awareness of the steps being taken at the national level (UK and Welsh Governments) to deal with it. The ability to talk and write about the emergency in a way understandable to most people will be crucial. Previous experience of dealing with the general public will be useful. Familiarity with social media and website posting is essential. Previous experience of dealing with the general public will be useful. CAN may require the applicant to provide a Disclosure and Barring (DBS) check prior to confirming their appointment to this role.
